The Color Guard Instructor provides shared leadership in support of the Manassas Park High School Marching Band program. In collaboration with the High School Band Director, the instructor is responsible for choreographing routines, coordinating rehearsals and performances, and supporting students’ growth in color guard techniques. This includes planning and supervising participation in rehearsals, football games, parades, community events, performances, and competitions.
RequisiteEducation and Skills
- High school diploma required, bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in color guard, with experience in choreography, instruction, and performance.
- Proficiency in various components of guard performance, including flags, rifles, sabres, and dance.
- Ability to design and teach routines that visually enhance the marching band program.
- Prior experience evaluating student skills and adapting routines accordingly.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Passion for motivating and engaging students in a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Job Responsibilities and Duties
- Plan and lead off-season training sessions, including rookie camps and clinics.
- Establish performance expectations and ensure student eligibility in accordance with academic requirements.
- Assist in planning and directing rehearsals and performances for both school and community events.
- Collaborate with the band director to teach choreography, drill, and movement for the full ensemble.
- Utilize appropriate instructional strategies and materials tailored to student learning styles and abilities.
- Foster a positive learning environment that supports the physical, social, and emotional development of all students.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of guard equipment, materials, and supplies.
Must have the ability to effectively communicate and interact with other staff and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions will be required.
