About the Position:
The General Maintenance Technician II performs a series of skilled tasks in general building maintenance by assisting more senior-level trades workers and performs related duties as required or assigned.
The work schedule for this position is Tuesday-Saturday, 6am-2:30pm.
This position is required to work additional hours in the event of an emergency. This may require reporting to work early, staying late, and/or working weekends. Additionally, this position is designated as "Essential Personnel." All essential personnel employees are required to report for snow removal and assist with clearing grounds, roads, pathways, sidewalks, or steps.
Responsibilities:
- Under limited supervision, performs a variety of skilled building maintenance, repair, and construction tasks, independently or as a crew member, and performs related work as required in any trade or crew assignment;
- Performs minor mechanical, electrical, and plumbing repairs;
- Installs, repairs, and maintains all door closers, panic devices, and switches on automatic and handicap doors;
- Inspects and orders needed parts to repair or replace door pivots and hinges;
- Installs and repairs window treatments such as screens, blinds, and shades;
- Performs preventative maintenance, and informs supervisor of major maintenance needs;
- Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps the vehicle supplied with tools and materials, and keeps it maintained and in an orderly, clean condition;
- Performs miscellaneous duties such as cleaning and painting equipment and mechanical areas;
- Picks up materials from suppliers when requested;
- Inspects areas and reports problems to the supervisor;
- Maintains paperwork and electronic communications, including work orders and recording time;
- Orders and includes materials on work orders in an expedient manner;
- Follows established university and departmental policies and procedures;
- Follows established safety procedures and reports accidents and problems to the supervisor promptly;
- Performs assigned progressive on-the-job training tasks to develop skills in the general maintenance trade; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Journeyman's license or equivalent experience;
- Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 4+ years) in carpentry and general maintenance;
- Demonstrated knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the building maintenance and construction trades;
- Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions;
- Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and materials pertinent to the trades;
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions, diagrams, and manufacturers' manuals; and
- Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).
