Job Duties

As the HVAC‑R/Controls Technician in the Northern Forensic Laboratory, you will maintain, repair, troubleshoot, and monitor HVAC and control systems, and address general building maintenance (hand‑yman, plumbing, electrical) issues. You will perform preventive maintenance, breakdown repairs, and daily operations to ensure the building’s safety and functionality on a continuous basis. You must adhere to the Facility On‑Call Plan, respond to emergency repair calls within one hour, and work during non‑routine business hours to minimize disruption to laboratory operations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge and skill in maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and replacing HVAC and refrigeration systems of various types.
  • Knowledge of basic building maintenance practices, with emphasis on large building systems and renovations.
  • General knowledge of electrical and plumbing trades as well as other systems that fall under general building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications and other computer software programs.
  • Knowledgeable with standard safety procedures including personal protection, equipment operations, and lockout/tagout.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skills in the use of a variety of diagnostic tools, instruments, equipment, hand, and power tools.
  • Certified in the use of refrigerants.
  • Knowledge of IBC, OSHA, and NFPA as they apply to facilities maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret building plans and specifications.
  • Ability to prioritize and schedule work requests.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact and communicate effectively with vendors, contractors, and agency employees.
  • Ability to respond to emergency maintenance repairs and safety issues.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects and work from heights, with or without accommodations.
  • Valid driver’s license and/or another means of reliable transportation.
Additional Considerations
  • Journeyman HVAC license or ability to certify within one year of employment.
  • Master HVAC license.
  • Building Automation System (BAS) experience.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Knowledge of BOCA, NFPA, OSHA.
  • Experience working in comparable facilities such as hospitals or other laboratories with related building maintenance experience.
Background Investigation

Selected candidates must successfully pass a background investigation that includes a fingerprint‑based criminal history check, a federal background check for CODIS access, a DNA sample via buccal swab (saliva sample), and a drug test. Reference checks will include contact with current or previous supervisors.

Employment Eligibility Verification

Emergency Operations

This position is designated as essential to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations such as inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations.

Bonus Eligibility

Eligible new hires may be offered a sign‑on bonus, contingent upon a twelve‑month employment tenure agreement. A sign‑on bonus of up to $6,000 may be offered to eligible new hires.
