Position Overview
We invite you to join the largest high school system in the State of Connecticut, the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS), as a Buildings And Grounds Patrol Officer at Howell Cheney Technical High School in Manchester, CT.
Position Highlights:
- Location – Howell Cheney Technical High School, Manchester, CT
- Part‑time (32.5 hours/week)
- 1st Shift Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 2:00 pm
- 10‑month position, returning to work after summer break

- Enforce regulations relating to parking and traffic control as established by the assigned agency.
- Direct traffic on state property.
- Issue tickets for violations.
- Provide information and assistance to visitors.
- Guard entrances and exits to prevent trespassing, vandalism, theft and other violations.
- Perform routine vehicle and foot patrol duty and monitor security and alarm systems to detect theft and other criminal acts.
- Provide security escorts.
- Provide first aid when necessary.
- Perform dispatching and record‑keeping functions at a desk post.
- Assist in maintaining order among patients at a state hospital.
- Assist in searching for missing patients.
- Oversee the activities of fellow officers as designated.
- Assist in fire prevention and firefighting activities.
- Perform related duties as required.
Interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to think and act quickly in an emergency with judgment and discretion.
Minimum QualificationsAny experience or training which would provide the skills and abilities indicated above.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience working in the field of security.
- Experience working security in a school.
- Experience performing foot patrol duty within a school.
- Experience working at a post or desk checking in visitors using a security database.
- Experience providing escorts within a school.
Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license. Incumbents may be required to obtain and maintain a Standard First Aid Certificate and/or CPR certification.
Character RequirementsIn addition to the checking of references and facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.
Physical RequirementsIncumbents must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance, and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all duties of the class. Applicants may be required to pass a physical examination.
Working ConditionsIncumbents may be exposed to the attendant discomforts of working outdoors, to the effort of prolonged periods of walking and standing while on foot patrol and/or guard duty, and to some danger of injury in performing the duties of the class.
