PROJECT COORDINATOR - DEPT. OF PUBLIC WORKS
PAY RANGE - $31.61 - $45.07/hr - plus a comprehensive benefits package
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:Develops, inspects and coordinates all design and administrative activities for City improvement projects; performs directly related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform a variety of architectural and administrative tasks essential to City construction and improvement projects. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, Department Heads, contractors, architects and the public.
The principal duties of this class are performed in an indoor and outdoor work environment with frequent site visits.
- Supervises, designs, evaluates and coordinates the work of construction projects and provides technical advice on complex design projects;
- Performs management and administration of building construction projects;
- Inspects building construction projects performed by City crews, private contractors or utility companies, including excavations, building construction, repair and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and other various building component operations and related areas;
- Monitors and inspects construction equipment and supplies for adherence to quality control and specification requirements;
- Drafts preliminary, base, construction and presentation drawings to produce development plans and preliminary designs for architectural projects;
- Designs and develops comprehensive scope of work plan in accordance with project requirements and objectives, and develops project costs and personnel budgets for assigned projects;
- Operates and maintains files and coordinates activities of contractors, facility occupants and/or utilities with work scheduled by City crews and independent contractors;
- Coordinates development of project schedules and plans with City Directors, administrative staff and School Principals;
- Serves as a designer, advisor and planner for assigned projects and influences design construction layout concepts;
- Negotiates, develops and executes contracts and bid proposals with contractors and City crews to complete project work and supervises installations for adherence to project design requirements;
- Performs design projects in support of a city construction service using a Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) system and develops technical specification design packages for projects;
- Utilizes CAD for the inspection and maintenance of Emergency Battery Unit (EBU) inspections and replacement;
- Performs inspections of building construction projects in School and City buildings;
- Inspects building construction projects performed by City crews, private contractors or utility companies, including excavations, building construction, mechanical, electrical and other various building components;
- Monitors and inspects construction equipment and supplies for adherence to quality control and specification requirements;
- Develops construction specifications and coordinates material selections for building projects with vendors, manufacturers and other professional design firms;
- Develops presentation drawings and initial construction designs;
- Performs architectural design and project administration for minor projects under the supervision of Facilities Superintendent and Chief of Facilities;
- Researches City files for development of baseline information for project designs;
- Provides data and information to engineering, architectural, consultants and construction firms to develop contracted projects;
- Reviews, analyzes and researches building construction plans, projects and specifications for conformity with standards, regulations and operating practices;
- Maintains thorough and accurate documentation of all inspection process;
- Calculates estimates and quantities for building construction projects;
- Performs field review to check base drawings for completeness;
Researches and responds to questions on a variety of issues from contractors; citizens, consultants and City employees relating to the condition of citywide projects; - Monitors, maintains, and updates Auto Cad drawing files for inspection and testing of life safety emergency battery units throughout City and School buildings;
- Maintains and updates the Facilities Division website;
- Coordinates regularly with others to enhance interdepartmental efficiency;
- Provides guidance and demonstrations to new employees in similar positions;
- Keeps supervisors informed of work progress, issues, and potential solutions;
- Attends meetings and training to stay current on relevant practices and developments;
- Responds to citizen inquiries courteously and promptly;
