Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200 000) and eligibility period (one–five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
BasicRequirements
- United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
- Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine, obtained from a VA‑approved school for the year of completion.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
- Residency training:
Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. - For VA physicians involved in academic training programs, board certification may be required for faculty status. Approved residencies include ACGME, AOA, or other programs with at least five years of verified U.S. practice deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
- Residents currently enrolled in an ACGME/AOA‑accredited residency program and who otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs).
- PRPs must hold a full, unrestricted license and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they will have a scope of practice allowing certain restricted duties under supervision.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Preferred experience:
Board certification in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine. - Clinical leadership and administrative oversight:
Extensive experience in healthcare administration and management. - Ability to provide clinical‑administrative‑and‑programmatic oversight to Primary Care and ensure effective service delivery.
- Proficiency with VA system regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Experience managing healthcare programs and processes specific to the VA, ensuring compliance with national and network‑level initiatives.
- Quality improvement and customer service experience:
Driving quality improvement initiatives and embedding a customer‑oriented culture. - Proficient in analyzing clinical data to guide improvement efforts and implementing best practices in customer service to enhance patient and staff experience.
- Human resources and team building:
Proven track record in hiring, training, and professional development. - Ability to build and lead a high‑performing, innovative, and motivated team fostering trust, psychological safety, and continuous learning.
- BLS/ACLS certification.

- Physical requirements:
Applicants must meet physical standards for the position, including a pre‑placement physical examination and drug testing. Required lifting of 15–44 pounds and ability to perform tasks such as pushing, reaching, using fingers, walking, standing, kneeling, rapid coordination, depth perception, and basic color discrimination.
