Lead Peer Tutor

Southern New Hampshire University is looking for a student employee to serve as a Lead Peer Tutor in the Wolak Learning Center. This role mentors new tutors, provides advanced academic support, and contributes to program development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as a mentor and role model to new and current peer tutors; assist with onboarding, training, and professional development efforts.
  • Assist coordinator(s) with discipline‑specific training, conduct class visits, in‑class sessions, class‑embedded assignments, and other special projects as assigned.
  • Assist coordinator(s) with organizing team meetings, workshops, or training sessions that foster collaboration, equity, and continuous learning.
  • Assist with WLC office opening and required evening closing responsibilities.
  • Continue with student support roles as assigned, which may include drop‑in tutoring, one‑to‑one tutoring, review sessions, and class‑embedded assignments.
  • Provide advanced academic support in specific subject areas using differentiated, learner‑centered strategies based on individual strengths, learning styles, backgrounds, and prior knowledge.
  • Attend required All‑Peer Educator training sessions.
  • Check office communications daily for assignments, announcements, and correspondence.
  • Submit payroll hours and tracking forms promptly after each shift.
  • Support WLC annual goals and initiatives.
  • Engage in regular communication and one‑on‑one meetings with the tutoring coordinator.
Interpersonal Expectations
  • Motivate students and help them develop confidence through positive feedback on areas of improvement.
  • Demonstrate and coach others on strong study strategies, motivational techniques, and academic success habits consistent with tutor training.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with students, staff, and team members, modeling interpersonal and intercultural communication.
  • Apply critical thinking and leadership skills to resolve issues and promote a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Use appropriate academic technologies and tools to support peer tutoring, session documentation, and professional communication.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A minimum of one year of tutoring service at the Wolak Learning Center.
  • Current enrollment as a part/full‑time SNHU student.
  • Cumulative SNHU GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ease in relating to students from diverse backgrounds.
Learning Outcomes
  • Strengthen leadership skills that prepare student workers for post‑graduate employment and professional advancement.
  • Incorporate advanced communication skills in peer tutoring relationships, supporting clear, respectful dialogue.
  • Evaluate and adapt tutoring strategies based on learner feedback, session dynamics, and academic goals.
  • Practice inclusive tutoring ensuring all students feel welcomed, supported, and respected regardless of background or identity.
  • Take initiative in supporting the peer educator team, mentor others, and actively contribute to a positive team culture.
  • Model punctuality, ethical responsibility, and accountability, setting a standard for others within the program.
  • Collaborate with fellow peer educators and staff to coordinate programming and uphold the goals of the Wolak Learning Center.
  • Use learning platforms and communication tools to support students and peer educators across various tutoring modalities.
Work Hours

Hours vary.

Office

Hours:

Mondays‑Thursdays, 9:00am‑6:00pm;
Fridays, 9:00am‑4:30pm; closed Saturdays and Sundays.

Compensation

Hourly pay range: $13.00–$15.00. Actual offer will be based on skills, qualifications, experience and internal equity, in addition to relevant business considerations.
