Substation Project Structural Engineer

HDR Engineering is seeking a Substation Project Structural Engineer to join its growing team of Power Delivery professionals. The role focuses on structural design components of high‑voltage electrical switchyards and substation projects up to 500 kV, including steel structure and foundation analysis and design.

• Execute detailed structural engineering tasks for substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes, including design calculations, detailing, and preparing concept drawings for fabricators.
• Perform foundation design for substation structures, including drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and other types, using industry‑standard software.
• Prepare and review construction specifications and materials specifications.
• Assign tasks to EITs and provide technical guidance to non‑structural project team members.
• Coordinate and perform quality checks and reviews of project deliverables per HDR Quality Management System requirements and procedures; review deliverables from other teams as needed.
• Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.
• Mentor and train EITs and designers; work independently or with multi‑location teams.
• Manage multiple concurrent projects and participate in project reviews.
• Travel may be required.

• Experience with design of high‑voltage electrical switchyards and substation projects of varying complexity.
• Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113 and other industry standards.
• Proficiency with design software such as PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, Micro Station, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile or equivalents.
• At least 5 years of technical design experience in high‑voltage substation projects, including foundations and steel structures.
• Knowledge of AISC‑360, ASCE‑7, ACI‑318 and related standards.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong conceptual, organizational, problem‑solving and collaboration skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Professional engineering license valid in the location of the position (e.g., PE or P.Eng).
• Prior experience as a structural engineer.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RISA, STAAD, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar.
• Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or consulting firm.

Compensation ranges from $90,682 to $145,990, dependent on skills, experience, education and geographic location.
