Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the general direction of the Clinical Director OR and/or Clinical Nurse Manager and in accordance with standards of care and practice established by the Nursing Organization, the specific department and relevant regulations, the incumbent performs the following functions:

Responsibilities
  • Assist in moving and positioning patients for surgery.
  • Assist the surgeon in draping the patient.
  • Retract tissue and expose the operating field area during the operative procedure.
  • Clamp and tie vessels to control bleeding during surgical entry.
  • Keep the operative site dry.
  • Afford the surgeon the best possible exposure of the anatomy incident to the operation.
  • Assist the surgeon in identifying any structure which should not be ligated and keep these structures from the surgeon’s moves.
  • Assist in closure of the incision including tying off bleeders, applying sutures and wound dressing, and perform any and all tasks required by the surgeon incident to the particular procedure.
  • Practice correct operating room etiquette.
  • Comply with all relevant statutes, regulations and institutional policies pertaining to the role of the first assistant.
  • Apply principles of asepsis and infection control knowledgeably and skillfully.
  • Recognize potential emergency situations or surgical hazards and initiate preventative or corrective measures in a timely manner.
  • Perform proficiently and calmly in all emergencies.
  • Work effectively and in harmony as part of the operative team.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of appropriate instruments pertinent to the surgical case.
Qualifications
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).
  • Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA).
Location

Located in Manchester, NH, Catholic Medical Center is a 330‑bed acute care hospital and Level III Trauma Center serving southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts.
