LIFEGUARD I (SEASONAL) DEPT. OF PUBLIC WORKS

Monitors activities in aquatic areas to prevent accidents and provides assistance to patrons; performs directly related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The principal function of an employee in this class is to provide surveillance and protection duties at public aquatic facilities. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other City employees and the public.

The principal duties of this class are performed at public aquatic facilities, with some exposure to rescue hazards and hazardous pool chemicals.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK:

  • Monitors activities of patrons at public aquatic facilities;
  • Rescues patrons in distress and performs life‑saving procedures, including CPR, rescue breathing, and swimmer rescue techniques;
  • Maintains order at public aquatic facilities, including enforcing rules, resolving minor conflicts, and furnishing information to the public;
  • Provides customer service to patrons;
  • Provides first aid to injured patrons;
  • Completes all required reports and paperwork;
  • Completes daily in‑service training activities;
  • Performs moderate manual labor, as required;
  • Provides guidance and demonstrations to new employees in similar positions;
  • Keeps supervisors informed of work progress, issues, and potential solutions;
  • Attends meetings and training to stay current on relevant practices and developments;
  • Responds to citizen inquiries courteously and promptly;
  • Coordinates regularly with others to enhance interdepartmental efficiency; and
  • Performs additional duties as required by the classification.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of water rescue, resuscitation, first aid, and life‑saving practices and techniques;
  • Some knowledge of aquatics facility operation;
  • Some knowledge of safety requirements and standards, rules, and regulations;
  • Some knowledge of labor and custodial fundamentals;
  • Ability to pass a written test and a practical swim test;
  • Ability to identify resources in rescues and ground management;
  • Ability to accurately complete reports;
  • Ability to comprehend and follow safety rules and regulations;
  • Ability to deal with and resolve minor conflicts;
  • Ability to complete assignments that require good physical condition;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non‑technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time‑sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Completion of two years of High School and at least 16 years of age;
  • Zero to two years of experience in public aquatic facility activities;
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

REQUIRED SPECIAL

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Lifeguard Certification (Waterfront Lifeguard Certification preferred)
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification.
