AQUATICS SUPERVISOR (SEASONAL) DEPT. OF PUBLIC WORKS

Oversees and supervises pool operation, maintenance, safety, and rescue activities at aquatic facilities; performs directly related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The principal function of an employee in this class is to supervise the operational activities of aquatic programs and facilities. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Parks Facilities Operations Manager but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. Supervision is exercised over the work of employees in the classes of Lifeguard, Recreation Aide, and related aquatic support personnel.

The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other City employees, and the public. The principal duties of this class are performed at public aquatic facilities, with regular exposure to rescue hazards and hazardous pool chemicals.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK:

  • Works with the Parks Facilities Operations Manager in planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating the work of all aquatics division staff;
  • Hires, supervises, trains, evaluates, and coordinates the work of aquatic personnel;
  • Establishes and enforces standards of conduct for lifeguards, aquatics employees, and the general public at municipal pools and surrounding facilities;
  • Provides in-service training to lifeguards to keep lifeguard certifications current;
  • Provides recommendations for promotions and terminations;
  • Provides training and information to aquatics personnel on rules and regulations and information relating to pool and aquatic activities;
  • Completes administrative and recordkeeping tasks related to aquatics facilities and personnel;
  • Assesses daily and weekly facilities coverage, coordinates changes, and verifies payroll;
  • Monitors activities of patrons at public aquatic facilities;
  • Rescues swimmers in distress and performs lifesaving duties;
  • Oversees order at public aquatic facilities, including enforcing water safety rules, resolving conflicts, and furnishing information to the public;
  • Provides first aid to injured patrons;
  • Completes or oversees scheduling for lifeguards and other aquatic staff;
  • Develops aquatic facility policies, procedures, and protocols;
  • Resolves staff conflict issues;
  • Intercedes to resolve conflicts, complaints, and public relation issues that cannot be resolved by lifeguard personnel; contacts Police Department to handle volatile situations;
  • Manages minor facility issues;
  • Provides guidance and demonstrations to new employees in similar positions;
  • Keeps supervisors informed of work progress, issues, and potential solutions;
  • Attends meetings and training to stay current on relevant practices and developments;
  • Responds to citizen inquiries courteously and promptly;
  • Co‑ordinates regularly with others to enhance interdepartmental efficiency; and
  • Performs additional duties as required by the classification.

REQUIRED

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of water rescue, resuscitation, first aid, and lifesaving practices and techniques;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of facility operation and aquatics program;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of emergency procedures specific to facility and program;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of paperwork, deadlines, and purpose;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of pool water chemistry;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of state and local bathing codes;
  • Substantial knowledge of labor and custodial fundamentals;
  • Ability to identify resources in rescues and ground management;
  • Ability to accurately review and complete reports;
  • Ability to establish and maintain safety rules and regulations;
  • Ability to deal with and resolve complex public relations issues;
