Overview

Lead System Administrator, supporting TOS II, at Arnold Air Force Base, TN, responsible for design, support, and maintenance of IT systems and peripherals for U.S. Air Force Test Operations and Sustainment efforts. This role requires leadership of IT staff, coordination with test customers, deployment and management of Windows workstations and servers, cybersecurity controls enforcement, and the implementation of backup and disaster recovery strategies.

Job Duties
  • Lead and mentor IT System Administrator staff, setting expectations and goals.
  • Interface with test customers (Air Force, civilians, consultants) and BNH personnel to ensure objectives are met.
  • Attend morning stand‑up meetings scheduled by the test team.
  • Deploy, configure, and manage Windows workstation and server environments, including Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Manage end‑to‑end lifecycle of the server environment, including design, deployment, maintenance, and storage configuration.
  • Automate system configurations, patching, and administrative tasks using Power Shell.
  • Enforce cybersecurity controls, harden systems to DoD standards, manage GPOs, and audit security baselines in partnership with the ISSM.
  • Monitor system performance, execute patch management with tools like SCCM and WSUS, and perform vulnerability remediation.
  • Develop, maintain, and deploy standardized OS images using WDS, MDT, and SCCM.
  • Provide advanced Tier 2/3 technical support and complex troubleshooting for end‑users across hardware and software platforms.
  • Implement and test robust backup strategies and disaster recovery plans to ensure data integrity and system resilience.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to design, implement, and document scalable system improvements and virtualization projects.
  • Develop testing schedules, manage project timelines, and stay current with emerging technologies and best practices.
  • Work under condition of wearing PPE in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in an IT‑related field.
  • Grade 09: 8+ years of progressively relevant IT experience (or 12+ years if degree substituted).
  • Grade 10: 11+ years of progressively relevant IT experience (or 15+ years if degree substituted).
  • Must possess or commit to obtaining required certifications to assume an administrative role in accordance with DoD 8140 within 6 months of hiring.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance and access to the AEDC local area network.
  • Current U.S. citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive experience with Windows imaging and deployment (WDS, MDT, SCCM) and custom image maintenance.
  • Deep expertise in Linux (RHEL), Windows Server OS, and enterprise storage solutions (Net App ONTAP, Red Hat IdM).
  • Proficiency in managing DNS, DHCP, and network services in dynamic enterprise environments.
  • Skilled in scripting (Power Shell, Bash, Python) for automation and orchestration.
  • Strong understanding of virtualization (VMware vSphere, Citrix Xen Desktop/Xen App).
  • Knowledge of network protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, SSH) and network security best practices.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Effective communicator with proven teamwork and technical documentation abilities.
  • Microsoft certifications (MCSA, MCSE) for Windows Server/Domain management.
  • VMware certification (VCP‑DCV, VCAP).
