About The Role
Are you passionate about freshwater fisheries and looking to build your career within a supportive and friendly team? Do you enjoy combining field survey work with technical analysis and reporting, and want to contribute to projects that protect and enhance freshwater environments? We’re looking for a Freshwater Fisheries Consultant to join APEM’s nationwide Freshwater Fisheries team within our Water Management Division.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a collaborative team of aquatic scientists with expertise across fisheries science, surveys and wider aquatic ecology.
Our Freshwater Fisheries team delivers a diverse range of projects, supporting clients across the water, energy, conservation and infrastructure sectors. Our work includes fish surveys, habitat evaluations, fisheries impact and risk assessments, mitigation design, fish and eel passage investigations, and regulatory assessments including HRA, EIA and WFD. You’ll play a key role in supporting projects that balance responsible development with environmental protection.
Working alongside experienced Senior and Principal Consultants, you’ll develop your technical expertise, contribute to project delivery and build your confidence across freshwater fisheries surveys, data analysis and environmental reporting.
- At least one year’s relevant experience within freshwater fisheries, aquatic ecology or a related field
- A sound understanding of freshwater fish ecology, including migratory species, and the legislation and guidance that applies to their protection
- The ability to talk knowledgeably and passionately about freshwater fisheries and aquatic environments
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to analyse information and produce clear written outputs
- A proactive approach, with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a wider project team
- A willingness to undertake field‑based survey work and contribute to varied projects across the UK
- Experience undertaking freshwater fisheries survey techniques or other relevant aquatic survey methods
- Experience contributing to technical reports or environmental assessments
- Experience supporting proposal preparation, including budgeting or costing exercises
- Client engagement experience
- Professional accreditation or membership of a relevant professional body, or working towards this
