Painter & Decorator Band 4 Job overview

North Manchester General Hospital seeks a Painter and Decorator to support the Estates Directorate by delivering high‑quality painting, wallpapering and minor repair work across the hospital. The role ensures a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for patients, staff and visitors.

Main duties of the job

The primary responsibility is to provide day‑to‑day painting and decorating services, including planned and reactive maintenance, PPM, and small improvements across all NMGH sites. Tasks include:

  • Carrying out routine painting, wallpapering and touch‑up work in wards, corridors and patient rooms.
  • Responding to job orders via the Trust’s CAFM system and maintaining accurate work logs.
  • Performing planned maintenance on building systems and equipment.
  • Working independently or as part of a multidisciplinary maintenance team.

Additional duties may be undertaken as training and experience are gained.

Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 3 in Painting and Decorating or equivalent.
  • Recognised and registered EITB, City & Guilds or modern apprenticeship/approved equivalent in Building or Carpentry.
  • Health and Safety qualification.
Experience
  • Experience in a building or painting environment.
  • Knowledge of the specific trade.
  • Experience working in a hospital setting.
Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
  • Knowledge of Health Technical Memoranda, Health Building Notes and Estates legislation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision.
  • Experience working at height.
  • Capability to work in a demand‑driven service.
  • Computer literate and proficient keyboard skills.
  • Experience or knowledge in other trades.
Other Personal Attributes
  • Willingness to work flexibly and take initiative.
  • Results oriented and able to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and produce accurate information.
  • Good organiser.
