Summary

Join IHS Sanitation Facilities Construction to collaborate with American Indian Tribes in planning, designing, and constructing water, wastewater, and solid waste facilities. This position is eligible for the IHS Student Loan Repayment Program, with selection based on IHS priorities and available funds.

A Real  be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).

Duties
  • Perform planning, design, and construction oversight activities for community and individual water supply, wastewater, and solid waste facilities.
  • Visit tribal communities where projects are planned and constructed.
  • Review work prepared by technical staff.
  • Estimate costs and materials necessary to construct sanitation facilities.
  • Prepare engineering reports.
Requirements
  • Conditional trial or probationary period may apply.
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Valid state driver’s license that is Real‑.
  • Completion of a federal background investigation is required.
  • Must provide two valid forms of identification, including a Real‑ state‑issued .
  • Eventual submission of Confidential Financial Disclosure Form may be required.
  • Successful completion of E‑Verify employment verification check.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements

  • Degree in Engineering from a program accredited by ABET, or a program that includes differential and integral calculus and courses in at least five of the seven specified engineering science or physics areas.
  • Combination of education and experience that demonstrates thorough knowledge of physical and mathematical sciences and a good understanding of engineering sciences and techniques.
  • Professional registration or licensure (e.g., Engineer Intern, Engineer in Training, Professional Engineer). Current registration as an EI, EIT, or PE by any State, District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
  • Passage of a relevant written test (e.g., Fundamentals of Engineering).
  • Completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field, with at least one year of professional engineering experience under supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service, or
  • Master’s degree in engineering or a related field, or two full years of progressively higher‑level graduate education leading to a master’s degree, or
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program with superior academic achievement and at least one year of appropriate professional experience, or
  • Completed a 5‑year program of study totaling at least 160 semester hours leading to a bachelor’s degree in engineering and at least one year of professional experience, or
  • A combination of graduate level education in engineering or a related field and specialized experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements.
Education

Applicants should submit transcripts or a list of courses with titles, credit hours, and grades. Unofficial transcripts are accepted in the application package; official transcripts are required prior to an official offer. Only attendance or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education are acceptable. Foreign education must be accompanied by a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency.
