Starting Salary Range: $23.35 - $28.02/hour, DOQ

Description

Responsible for inspection of existing structures and new construction. Duties include inspections related to building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems to ensure safety and health of Manhattan citizens. This position focuses on inspections and plan review related to the issuance of a permit to ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and ordinances.

Essential Functions
  • Performs commercial and residential inspections and maintains reports.
  • Performs inspections of new construction and existing structures under a wide variety of site conditions and environmental factors for assurance of compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Inspects existing buildings and premises for change of use, occupancy, or compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Contributes to the health, safety, and welfare of the general public by conducting existing housing and nuisance inspections.
  • Studies and interprets code and construction-related regulations; conducts code enforcement actions as required.
  • Examines plans and specifications of new construction, additions, and alterations to residential and commercial buildings to determine compliance.
  • Communicates code compliance requirements orally and in writing to design and construction personnel, owners, and other appropriate persons.
  • Interprets codes and determines compliance/non‑compliance in specific situations.
  • Maintains accurate records on computer databases for inspections, compliance/enforcement, documentation of violations and repairs, and analysis.
  • Initiates and conducts code enforcement actions in accordance with guidelines, up to and including writing citations and legal actions.
  • Attends meetings and trainings as required.
  • Participates in and delivers in‑service training and public education programs.
  • Assists with damage assessment and initial response after widespread disasters.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
Requirements
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • 2 years of experience in building construction or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Education And Experience
  • ICC Certification as a Residential Building Inspector (required within 1 year of hire).
  • Experience conducting building inspections.
