Assistant Professor, Extension Crop Production Specialist
Kansas State University
The Extension Crop Production/Cropping Systems Specialist provides leadership for an interdisciplinary team to develop and deliver strong Extension and applied research programs focused primarily on row crop production and cropping systems for Kansas and the Central Great Plains.
Responsibilities- Develop educational programs for a broad clientele, including farmers, crop advisors, agri‑businesses, agency personnel, and commodity groups.
- Plan and conduct traditional educational meetings and workshops (field days, plot tours, crop schools, update meetings).
- Produce Extension publications, training materials, newsletters, and web and social media content to disseminate knowledge.
- Collaborate with county and district extension agents to support state, area, district, and county programs.
- Engage with colleagues in Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Economics, Animal Science and Industry, Entomology, and Plant Pathology on issues of soil and water management, enterprise profitability, and crop system utilization.
- Establish and maintain a grant‑funded applied research program complementary to the Extension program, including graduate student training and publication of research results.
- Work effectively within a collegial, team‑based environment.
- Ph.D. in Agronomy, Crop Science, or a related discipline with a strong background in crop production and cropping systems under field conditions.
- Commitment to extension education at the university level.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Publication record in peer‑reviewed journals commensurate with current career level and potential for securing extramural funding.
- Experience in graduate student mentoring and teaching.
- A commitment to fostering collegiality and teamwork in a multicultural environment.
- Experience in state and local level extension activities.
- Experience leading or working on interdisciplinary extension teams.
- Experience designing and implementing field research with agronomic crops and Great Plains cropping systems.
- Demonstrated grant writing and extramural funding success.
- Experience developing Extension materials and building relationships with producers, commodity groups, and industry partners.
- Proficiency with emerging communication technologies to disseminate knowledge.
This position is On‑site. All employees must reside in the United States when they begin working to comply with state law. Kansas State University does not provide remote or hybrid work opportunities for residents of the state of Idaho.
