Provide academic instruction for students who are deaf and hard of hearing in their primary mode of communication within a residential education setting.
Responsibilities- Individual and small group instruction: 75% of time in academic areas (reading, math, science, etc.) and non‑academic areas as needed per IEP for K‑12 students.
- Instructional duties: Prepare and implement assigned curricula, deliver daily‑prepared lessons, utilize instructional materials, and assess and document student progress.
- Lesson plan review: Supervisory review of lesson plans and assessment documentation upon request.
- Related activities (15%):
- Plan instructional activities; prepare IEPs; address individual issues related to student progress, performance, or behavior.
- Prepare report cards; supervise and instruct teaching assistants; gather and prepare instructional materials.
- Supervise student teachers and/or observers from various colleges; attend committee meetings and in‑service workshops.
- Plan and implement field trips; administer formal and informal tests/assessments.
- Communication (5%): Liaison between residential and academic staff, parents, local educational agencies, and other schools; administer proctoring and compiling of state‑mandated tests, portfolios, and inventories.
- Daily contact with supervisor concerning duties.
- Contact office concerning daily bus duty or Friday bus duty.
- Daily student contact (giving out passes, getting students to appointments, collecting information).
- Disseminating information on daily/weekly/monthly reports.
- Completion of confidential information to other agencies; determining release with guidance.
- Receiving, compiling, filing, and disseminating information from service providers pertaining to middle school students.
- Assisting supervisor in verifying and updating campus inventory related to middle school.
Accuracy is required in understanding, effectively communicating, and implementing program and curriculum goals and objectives, and ensuring IEP goals/objectives are documented appropriately.
Error ConsequencesInconsistency and lack of accuracy leads to confusion of students, poor communication with students, staff, and parents, and delays student progress. Failure to carry out responsibilities places employee and school in a liable position.
Instructions and EvaluationsDirect instructions will be provided verbally or in writing by supervisor. The supervisor will conduct regular evaluations and provide feedback. An employee growth plan will be developed and reviewed periodically.

Responsibility for daily supervision is by the academic program supervisor and/or School Director. Goals are established through the Individual Growth Plan. Routine and daily assignments are made orally and in writing by the supervisor. Policies, procedures, and directives established by and for the Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf will be adhered to.
Personal Contacts- Daily contact with parents concerning meetings, concerns, behavioral issues, and needs.

- Contact with guests and government officials when necessary.
Effective sign language skills, receptive and expressive, to communicate with deaf students, employees, parents, and visitors. Ability to communicate courteously and tactfully with all people.
Physical EffortMust have dexterity to use sign language; mobility and endurance to keep up with students; ability to get down and up off the floor with children if necessary; assist children with hygiene needs if applicable.
