Summary/ObjectiveThe Engineer II is responsible for preliminary engineering, contract drawing and specification development, project management, study preparation or review, and plan review as assigned.
Essential FunctionsDesigns in-house engineering projects and studies as well as providing reviews for consultant designed projects and studies.
- Develops in-house designs for traffic, transportation, stormwater, water and sanitary sewer projects contributing to the creation of construction contract documents (plans and specifications).
- Coordinates with City staff for in-house design or the review of projects designed by consultants.
- Performs complex engineering calculations and applies civil engineering principles.
- Contributes to a quality and efficient project by creativeness, thoroughness and accuracy of designs and studies.
- Conducts research for property ownership, including right-of-way and easement boundaries, previous construction documentation and field site visits.
- Develops in-house traffic studies, stormwater studies or other studies as assigned.
- Prepares cost estimates and other documentation that supports engineering projects.
- Prepares and oversees permit applications for regulatory approvals needed for construction projects.
- Reviews plats; studies; construction plans and specifications; as assigned to ensure they meet the City’s requirements and accepted engineering principles.
- Responsible for the construction administration of construction projects as assigned.
- Assists with building permit and community development planning project review as assigned.
- Assists in developing and executing projects for the annual street maintenance program.
Performs additional duties as required.
- Attends meetings and training.
- Acts as a main contact point for outside groups and public agencies; answer questions and fulfills requests.
- Manages stress from project deadlines and puts in extra effort as necessary.
- Prepares reports and makes public presentations.
- Maintains all records and documentation.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures in all duties.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Valid EIT Certification.
- Possession of a Professional Engineering (PE) license in the State of Kansas or in another state with the ability to obtain a professional engineering license in the State of Kansas within one year of hire into this position.
- Four (4) years of design and/or project management experience of construction projects.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Excellent analytical skills
- Refined engineering technical skills to develop contract drawings and specifications with minimum supervision while managing the design schedule and project budget.
- Knowledge of new technologies, engineering practices and design guides.
- Knowledge of basic principles and practices of supervision to direct and coordinate activities of the CAD Technicians or others as necessary.
- Boot, Clothing and Vehicle Allowances, if applicable.
