Summary
The USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) invites applications for a Research Scientist position in the National Bio & Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF), Foreign Arthropod-Borne Animal Diseases Research Unit (FABADRU) in Manhattan, Kansas. This is an open‑ended promotion track; the grade level is limited only by the applicant’s demonstrated ability to conduct research of recognized importance to science and technology, subject to final determination by a peer review panel.
ResponsibilitiesConduct systematic, objective investigations of animal diseases and host‑pathogen relationships involving zoonotic arthropod‑borne viruses. Design and implement scientific methods, collect samples for molecular analysis in compliance with U.S. government animal welfare regulations, and independently research molecular virology. Provide results that contribute to the mission of the NBAF and FABADRU.
QualificationsBASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
- Microbiology (GS‑0403): A degree in Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, or Basic Medical Science that includes at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences, or a combination of education and experience that is equivalent.
- Veterinary Medicine (GS‑0701):
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent, and if obtained from a foreign veterinary school, proof of accreditation equivalency, a permanent and unrestricted license to practice in the U.S., and proficiency in English (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, CAEL) with the required minimum scores.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- GS‑12, Microbiology series (GS‑0403):
One‑year specialized experience at the GS‑11 level, or its non‑Federal equivalent, in independently implementing scientific principles to investigate animal diseases and host‑pathogen relationships; or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to microbiology, virology, or immunology. - GS‑12, Veterinary Medicine series (GS‑0701):
One‑year specialized experience at the GS‑11 level, or its non‑Federal equivalent, in the same area; or a Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., animal science, epidemiology, veterinary preventive medicine, microbiology, etc.) and completion of a two‑year internship, residency or fellowship program related to the position, with documentation of completion. - GS‑13, Microbiology series (GS‑0403):
One‑year specialized experience at the GS‑12 level, including experience collecting samples for molecular analysis that complies with U.S. animal welfare regulations, and independent research of zoonotic arthropod‑borne viruses evidenced by publications.
