About This RoleSorghum and pearl millet breeding program is one of the major research activities. The program involves continuous field work every year starting in April to November during the crop growing period and greenhouse work during the off‑season months. Development of parental lines and hybrids, evaluation at multi‑locations and various field and laboratory operations such as field preparation, fertilizer and herbicide application, planting, irrigating the breeding field nurseries, field crossing, assist selection, data collection, compilation, plot combine and single plant harvesting, drying, threshing, cleaning, seed treatment with chemicals, short‑term and long‑term seed storage, and shipping seeds to the winter nursery.
This position is vital to assist the classical breeding program on sorghum and other millets.

This position is on‑site. All employees must reside in the United States when they begin working to comply with state law. K‑State is unable to provide remote or hybrid work opportunities for residents of the state of Idaho.
What You'll Need to SucceedMinimum Qualifications
- Requires one year of relevant experience.
- Valid driver's license.
- BS degree preferred.
- Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, in order to interpret precise instructions, procedures, technical plans and designs, and keep research and production records.
- Certified, or capable and willing to be certified, to apply restricted‑use pesticides to crops.
- Ability to drive large and small farm equipment safely and skillfully.
- Ability to recognize plant diseases and signs of insect infestation.
- Knowledge of the hazards and effects of pesticides (herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, etc.) and the ability to read and interpret label and MSDS instructions regarding safe and proper use of agricultural chemicals.
- Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions pertaining to repair, maintenance, and operation of agricultural equipment, vehicles, and power tools.
- Knowledge of the methods, practices, techniques and tools used in planting and the ability to read and follow plans and designs for planting.
- Ability to set up, calibrate, and operate precision agricultural equipment.
- Ability to use desktop and laptop computers including the use of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship.
