Electrician Leader

Summary

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Plains Area (PA), National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF), Facilities Operation and Management unit in Manhattan, Kansas. In this position, you will serve as the supervisor over a staff responsible for the maintenance, repair, renovations, and alterations on electrical systems and equipment supplying NBAF.

Operate electrical distribution systems including installing, modifying, repairing, maintaining, testing, and loading new and existing electrical systems, equipment and their components.

Perform maintenance and repair electrically operated laboratory equipment.

Apply knowledge of wire size, type and arrangement for proper and safe operation of electrical systems.

Use trade formulas to calculate common properties, such as, voltage or voltage drop and current capability in series and parallel circuits, resistance, inductance, capacitance, and power factors.

Interpret building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the work.

Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment, distribution circuits and controlling equipment to locate and correct the cause of outages and improper operation.

Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position.

Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. Incumbent performs duties in utility spaces, on ladders and scaffolding and may operate a boom truck. Work requires close hand and eye coordination, active walking, prolonged periods of standing on concrete floors, climbing, bending, reaching and working cramped positions or crowded areas or confined spaces (manholes). May be required to lift equipment or material weighing up to 75 lbs.

Working Conditions:

Incumbent usually performs work inside heated building, but may be required to work on equipment located outside of buildings and on rooftops. Incumbent may work in areas where the following hazards are present: mechanical systems; energized electrical systems; infectious agents gas, fumes, dirt and grease. Clothing changes are provided by NBAF while at duty station. May be required to shower prior to reporting to duty station in accordance with entrance/exit safety protocols for specific areas of NBAF.

Safety equipment must be used when required. Incumbent may be required to wear a full-faced respirator when working in biological control settings. The mission of NBAF includes research, diagnosis and training for animal diseases foreign to the United States (U.S.) for the purpose of protecting American agriculture and domestic food sources from their potentially devastating effects. NBAF is vital to successfully protecting U.S. agriculture from the intentional or non-intentional introduction of foreign animal diseases such as Foot-and-Mouth disease.
