Description

CPS Initial Assessment Social Worker

Human Services Department

We are seeking a compassionate, skilled, and motivated CPS Initial Assessment Social Worker to respond to reports of child abuse and neglect, assess family safety, and connect families with the resources they need to succeed. This role is ideal for someone who excels at relationship-building, critical thinking, and trauma-informed practice.

What You’ll Do
  • Conduct child protective services initial assessments involving allegations of abuse and/or neglect
  • Interview children, parents, caregivers, collateral contacts, referral sources, and community partners
  • Assess child safety, family functioning, and risk factors through home visits and ongoing evaluation
  • Observe home environments and complete thorough safety assessments
  • Develop and implement safety plans to support children and families when concerns are identified
  • Make critical decisions regarding child safety, including determining when out-of-home placement is necessary
  • Coordinate appropriate care and placement options for children when removal is required
  • Build trust and rapport with families while navigating difficult and emotionally charged situations
  • Apply trauma-informed care principles to support positive outcomes for children and caregivers

Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in social work and certification by the State of Wisconsin as a Social Worker. Certification must be obtained within six months from the date of hire. A Wisconsin Driver's license is also required.
