RESPONSIBILITIES/

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Department of English is seeking on-campus/in-person and online (residing in MN) Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) for the  academic year. GTAs teach one (1) four-credit section of Foundations of Writing and Rhetoric (ENG 101) per semester during the academic year, supervised by the department First-Year Writing Director and/or Multilingual Writing Director. All new GTAs must report for a one-week workshop on August 10, 2026.

New international GTAs are required to report to the university by August 3, 2026, in order to complete the necessary government and employment paperwork. Fall classes begin on August 24, 2026.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English or related field.
  • Strong English language speaking and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in academic writing.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with undergraduate students, faculty, and other GTAs.
  • Admitted to a Minnesota State University, Mankato graduate program by start date.
  • Enrolled in a minimum of six (6) graduate credits per semester during assistantship, and in good academic standing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
  • Strong interest in teaching composition to a variety of undergraduate student populations.

SALARY/STIPEND: Up to $10,000 plus tuition stipends, dependent upon availability of funds, period of appointment, and assignment. Appointments made after the tenth day of classes are not eligible for a tuition waiver.

RELATED INFORMATION:

Minnesota State System policy requires that graduate assistants must reside within the State of Minnesota for the duration of their appointment.

  • Before being awarded an assistantship, applicants must be admitted to a graduate program.
  • New GTAs are required to enroll in a workshop course (ENG 622) that runs August 10-14, 2026, and continues meeting weekly during the fall semester.
  • GTAs are required to take ENG 625:
    Composition Theory or ENG 628:
    Second Language Writing at least one year prior to graduation.
  • GTAs in the English Department are instructors of record, responsible for developing materials and delivering content for their own ENG 101 course within the parameters of the existing course curriculum.
  • GTAs are renewable for a second year, contingent upon good academic standing, satisfactory performance, and funding. Additionally, GTAs are expected to complete annual professional development and engage respectfully with faculty, peers, and students.

In accordance with the MnSCU Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle, shall be required to conform to MnSCU’s vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
