The Therapeutic recreation director is accountable for the development, implementation, supervision, and ongoing evaluation of the activity and recreation programs to ultimately enhance residents' quality of life. Completion of the activity's component of the comprehensive individual assessment and contributing to resident care plans to ensure the activities programs are designed to meet the individual interests as well as physical, emotional and psychosocial well-being of each resident.
Implements programs, monitors responses to them and determines if individual resident needs are being met, revising as needed and keeping with the Resident’s Bill of Rights as well as the facility Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program. In locations where there are no TR Aides, the TR Director will fulfill the duties of the TR Aide as well.
- Planning and Delivering Activities Programs Designs and implements a comprehensive activities program that promotes residents’ physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being; schedules and posts programs at least 5 days per week and encourages resident participation and social interaction.
- Individualized and Group Engagement Conducts individual and group activities based on resident assessments, including in-room projects for confined residents and offsite events; empowers residents to be involved in planning and choosing activities.
- Documentation and Reporting Completes assessments (initial, quarterly, annual, and as needed), documents activities in medical records, and integrates Therapeutic Recreation (TR) goals into resident care plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
- Volunteer Program Management Recruits, orients, trains, monitors, and evaluates volunteers; maintains volunteer engagement and recognizes service contributions while ensuring they understand role boundaries.
- Therapeutic Recreation Team Management Participates in hiring, orienting, coaching, and evaluating TR staff; fosters creativity and motivation among team members to enhance resident activities.
- Department Leadership and Compliance Manages department budget, staff hours, supplies, and equipment; ensures safety, sanitation, and infection control standards; acts as Resident Council Advisor; participates in leadership meetings, facility inspections, audits, and offsite TR professional development.
- Must be a TR Specialist or Activities Professional who is licensed or registered in Minnesota and is eligible for certification as a TR Specialist or as an Activities Professional; or have 2 years’ experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, 1 of which was FT in a patient activities program in a health care setting; or qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant;
or has completed a training course approve by the state of Minnesota - Experience in healthcare, skilled nursing facility or assisted living community
