Responsibilities

The Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) serves as an intensivist in an 18‑bed critical care unit. The role partners with a multidisciplinary team to manage critically ill patients from admission through transfer. This is a nocturnist position requiring night shifts, weekends, and holidays on a rotating schedule.

  • Patient Assessment and Documentation

    Perform and document comprehensive history and physical examinations, daily progress notes, and transfer and discharge summaries in the electronic health record.

    Order and interpret diagnostic tests using appropriate clinical assessment techniques.

    Continuously assess patient risk factors including medication effects, hemodynamic stability, nutrition, mobility, fluid balance, and invasive therapies.

  • Diagnosis and Clinical Decision Making

    Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to develop accurate diagnoses for acute and complex conditions.

    Order, perform, interpret, and oversee diagnostic testing.

    Develop and document differential diagnoses and risk stratification to guide care planning.

  • Care Planning and Implementation

    Develop individualized, evidence‑based plans of care aligned with clinical protocols and patient needs.

    Identify expected outcomes and adjust plans based on patient condition and response.

    Prescribe diagnostic and therapeutic interventions to optimize outcomes.

    Perform procedures within scope and competency, including line placement and removal, suturing, and wound management.

  • Monitoring and Evaluation

    Continuously evaluate patient progress and modify the plan of care based on clinical findings.

    Ensure vigilant monitoring and attention to detail to support optimal patient outcomes.

  • Communication and Collaboration

    Maintain effective communication with the interdisciplinary care team.

    Facilitate clear communication with patients, families, and staff to ensure continuity of care.

    Complete documentation accurately, timely, and in compliance with regulatory standards.

Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner: Masters-prepared graduate of an accredited nursing school and nurse practitioner program. Current MN RN and APRN license with certification as a FNP, ANP, or ACNP.

Physician Assistant: Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program with current PA certification by the NCCPA and registration as a PA by the MN State Board of Medical Practice.

  • Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross at start date and DEA registration required.
  • Open to new graduates with fellowship training, ICU clinical or RN experience; ICU APP experience preferred.
  • Strong focus on evidence-based practice and patient safety.
  • Collaborative, team-driven environment.
Schedule

Full-time, 12.5‑hour night shifts on a rotating nocturnist schedule. Coverage is required 365 days a year, including holidays and weekends, with approximately one weekend in three. Shift differentials are included for both nights and weekends.
