Elementary Bilingual Teaching Assistant
The Elementary Bilingual Teaching Assistant supports early-grade language and literacy development by assisting teachers in delivering high-quality instruction to emergent bilingual students. The position focuses on supporting foundational bilingual literacy, oral language acquisition, and academic success through small-group and individualized assistance in both English and Spanish.
QualificationsEducation:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of at least 48 college credit hours, an associate degree, or successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment (per federal requirements)
- Fluent in English and Spanish (oral and written)
Experience:
- Experience working with children in an educational setting preferred.
- Experience supporting bilingual or ESL learners strongly preferred.
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
- Understanding of early literacy and numeracy instruction.
- Ability to scaffold and support bilingual learners in both languages.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with young students.
- Patience, empathy, and flexibility in supporting diverse learners.
Instructional Support:
- Assist teachers in implementing bilingual, dual language, or ESL lessons aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS).
- Support small-group and individual instruction in literacy, numeracy, and language development.
- Reinforce phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension skills using age-appropriate bilingual strategies. Prepare and adapt learning materials for bilingual and ESL instruction under teacher guidance.
- Translate and explain academic tasks to help students access the curriculum.
Language and Cultural Development:
- Encourage students to value and use both English and Spanish in the classroom.
- Model correct usage of both languages in academic and social settings.
- Support teachers in creating a culturally responsive classroom that celebrates students' heritage and background.
Student Support and Supervision:
- Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, cafeterias, and during transitions.
- Foster a nurturing, inclusive environment that promotes engagement and respect.
- Provide additional emotional and academic encouragement for newly arrived bilingual students.
Collaboration and Family Engagement:
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, interventionists, and bilingual specialists to support individual student needs. Communicate effectively with parents/guardians in both English and Spanish regarding student progress and needs. Participate in campus training and professional development related to bilingual education and early literacy. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other administrator that are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position.
