is looking for a writer to help cover cross country during the 2026 fall season through weekly feature coverage and dual meet recaps.
This is a paid freelance/part-time stipend position that will run from September 2026 through November 2026
.
The role can be done mostly remotely, but ideally the writer will have some availability for in-person coverage, especially for major meets, championship events, or local feature opportunities.
This role is ideal for someone who knows the sport, enjoys telling athlete-driven stories, and can help shine a spotlight on the runners and teams across the Hockomock League. Coverage will focus on the athletes, breakout stars, races, rivalries, team traditions, and storylines that make cross country compelling throughout the season.
Past coverage has highlighted individual runners battling back from injuries, breakout underclassmen, senior standouts chasing championship goals, programs building winning cultures, and teams celebrating milestone seasons. The goal is to tell stories that give cross country athletes thoughtful coverage and recognition beyond the results sheet.
Responsibilities include:
Writing one cross country feature per week during the fall season
Writing brief recaps from weekly dual meets, usually six meets per day, once a week, for five weeks total
Communicating with coaches to collect results, highlights, quotes, and additional information
Finding and pitching story ideas from around the Hockomock League
Interviewing athletes and coaches
Providing context on league races, top runners, team success, championship outlooks, and season-long storylines
Writing clean, engaging copy on deadline
Working with editors on story direction and edits
The ideal candidate has:
Strong writing skills
Knowledge of cross country and/or distance running
An ability to identify human-interest angles, not just race results
Comfort communicating with high school coaches and athletes
Reliability during the fall season
Familiarity with the Hockomock League is a plus, but not required
