Position: Staff R&D Engineer (Mansfield, MA)

Join us in Mansfield as a Staff R&D Engineer and help shape the next generation of soft tissue and bone healing therapies. What will you be doing?
  • Leading research and technology project teams, providing technical direction and mentoring to engineers
  • Driving concept development, prototyping, product design, feasibility work and verification testing, including writing protocols and reports
  • Developing and validating biomechanical and biological test methods for sports medicine repair devices
  • Creating and maintaining design control documentation including risk assessments, usability, user needs and design inputs
  • Engaging with customers, including surgeons and commercial teams, to understand user needs and observe procedures
  • Supporting patent activities, competitive analysis and product performance testing
  • Guiding products through development phases supporting scale up toward commercialization
What will you need to be successful?
  • BS degree with 8 years' experience, MS with 3 years or PhD with 1 year in engineering, science or related field, or equivalent combination
  • Strong expertise in product design, prototyping and testing
  • Ability to work independently, applying sound judgment and offering innovative solutions
  • Experience developing test methodologies and authoring technical documentation
  • Strong communication skills for presenting research internally and externally
  • Knowledge of design controls and regulatory expectations including PMA and BLA pathways
  • Advanced statistical analysis skills including Minitab

The anticipated base compensation range for this position is $125,500- $217,750 USD annually. The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role at Smith + Nephew.

Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
