Position: Staff R&D Engineer, Sports Medicine (Mansfield, MA)

As a Staff Research and Development Engineer, you will play a critical role in advancing innovative therapies that improve healing for patients around the world. Based at our Mansfield, Massachusetts site, this is an opportunity to lead complex R&D projects, influence product strategy from concept through commercialization, and mentor others while shaping the future of sports medicine and soft tissue repair.

What

will you be doing?
  • Act as a technical lead on research and technology project teams, driving innovation from early research through commercialization.
  • Lead concept development, prototyping, product design, feasibility, verification testing, and support production scale-up.
  • Develop and validate biomechanical and biological test methodologies for sports medicine repair devices.
  • Create and maintain design control documentation including risk assessments, usability assessments, user needs, and design inputs in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to engineers, scientists, and technologists, with potential day‑to‑day supervision responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, marketing, and sales partners to observe procedures and translate user needs into design solutions.
  • Support intellectual property development through invention disclosures and patent prosecution activities.
  • Present research outcomes to internal and external stakeholders and support competitive product analysis.
What will you need to be successful?
  • An advanced degree or equivalent experience in engineering or science with at least 4 to 12 years of relevant R&D experience, depending on degree level.
  • Proven expertise in research, design, prototyping, and testing of medical devices or related technologies.
  • Strong working knowledge of design controls and regulated product development environments.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction while exercising sound technical judgment.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and collaboration skills with the ability to mentor others and influence cross‑functional teams.

The anticipated base compensation range for this position is $125,500 - $198,000 USD annually. The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job‑related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role at Smith+Ne.

Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate. In addition to base pay, we provide competitive bonus and benefits, which include medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401k, tuition reimbursement, medical leave programs, parental leave, and generous PTO, paid company holidays annually and 8 hours of Volunteer time and a variety of wellness offerings such as EAP.
