- Document and report economic violations with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).
- Investigate assigned complaints regarding violation of PUCO rules and regulations.
- Utilize portable laptop and other computer equipment.
- Recommend on-site corrections for violations.
- Provide assistance where possible.
- Maintain effective public relations with drivers, company representatives, law enforcement officers and others to ensure compliance with state and federal safety regulations.
- Assist other inspectors, troopers and local law enforcement.
- Prepare and deliver presentations and/or training related to highway safety and compliance with state and federal rules.
- Testify in court regarding violations.

- Option 1
6 months experience enforcing commercial motor vehicle laws or regulations;
1 course or 3 months experience in public relations;
Valid driver’s license. - Option 2
-Or 6 months training or 6 months experience in motor carrier inspection or commercial vehicle maintenance;
1 course or 3 months experience in public relations;
Valid driver’s license. - -Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
- Position Specific
Minimum Qualifications:
Valid Driver’s license required.
Successful completion of all required in‑service training programs; must maintain annual certification requirements for all North American standard training to conduct inspections of federal regulations (e.g., Level I, hazardous materials, motor coach & cargo tank). Must successfully obtain LEADS certification 6 months after employment. Must re‑certify in LEADS every two years as mandated by Ohio Administrative Code 4501:2-10-03 (C)(4).
Unusual Working ConditionsRequires travel; may need to work overtime, nights or weekends and rotating shifts; subject to after‑hours call outs in emergency situations. Works outside exposed to weather, dirt, rust, car fumes, burns from hot engines, fast‑moving vehicles, highway noise; hazardous materials and unpredictable behavior from vehicle owners and operators; conducts inspections in confined spaces.
Background Check Information- BCI and FBI fingerprint check, background check, including a polygraph examination, may be required.
- A comparative analysis and/or drug test may be a requirement of the hiring process.
Position is identified as safety sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with DPS 501.24.
