Recreation Leader

Basic Function:

Under supervision, the Recreation Leader acts as a leader and instructs, supervises others in recreational activities at various locations such as public parks, After School programs, Day Camps, the senior center and community sites. Recreation Leader is a part time position that provides assistants to coordinators, volunteers, and participants in conducting successful recreation activities; and assists professional staff in planning, organizing and conducting recreation activities and events.

• Becomes familiar with rules and regulations of activities and events and enforces them.
• Displays leadership, responsibility, and professionalism during and after work hours.
• Communicates strongly with patrons, students, other staff members, and supervisors.
• Follows work procedures and schedules.
• Issues written and oral instructions to participants.
• Works with a workforce of 5-50 staff members.
• Prepares attendance and accident reports.
• Work weekdays, weekends and evenings.
• Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, leading recreation activities, sports, and games, crafts activities for children, teens and adults.
• Collecting of fees, helping set up for classes, events, etc.
• Responds to public inquiries about programs.

• Knowledge of the facilities, operations and techniques used in community programs and group leadership.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to maintain equipment and facilities to ensure they are clean and in working order.

Indoor and outdoor work environment with ability to work a flexible work schedule, depending upon program needs, including working evenings, weekends, holidays and shifting assignments as program needs change. The noise level in the work environment can vary, ranging from quiet to loud. Incumbents will work in cool to hot environments with sufficient water, breaks and shade provided.

Stand, walk, sit, kneel, stoop, crouch; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects and tools and operate motorized equipment. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Incumbents are required to use vision and/ or hearing to identify and evaluate field emergencies, and to respond physically to these emergencies quickly and appropriately.

Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.
Valid work permit if under 18 years of age.
Satisfactory fingerprint clearance by the Department of Justice.
