Basic Function
The primary role of this position is to coordinate, support, and assist in the planning, organization, and facilitation of youth sports, aquatics programs, and recreation facility operations. Recreation Specialists are responsible for delivering safe, fun, and engaging programs while ensuring facilities are properly managed and participants have positive recreational experiences. Staff must have a genuine interest in community recreation, youth development, and creating a safe and welcoming environment for participants and the public.
This position requires strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills to maintain program quality, support staff and volunteers, and ensure smooth day‑to‑day operations.
This is a temporary part‑time position. The successful candidate may be required to work variable hours and days, including evenings and weekends. Hours can range from 0 to 28 per week depending on program and facility needs.
Distinguishing Characteristics- Recreation Specialist I—Entry‑level classification for individuals new to program or facility leadership.
- Recreation Specialist II
—Journey‑level classification; requires one year of experience in recreation program or facility leadership. - Recreation Specialist III
—Senior‑level classification; requires two or more years of progressively responsible experience.
- Assist with the coordination and supervision of youth sports leagues, classes, and camps.
- Ensure proper game‑day operations including field set‑up, scorekeeping, and equipment distribution.
- Support volunteer and contract coaches, providing guidance and resources as needed.
- Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and skill development for all participants.
- Assist with swim lessons, recreational swim, and aquatics special events.
- Monitor pool safety and provide support to lifeguards and instructors.
- Ensure proper use, storage, and care of aquatics equipment.
- Help maintain a safe and welcoming aquatics environment.
- Support daily operations of community centers, gyms, pools, and sports fields.
- Assist with facility rentals, customer service, and supervision of drop‑in programs.
- Help enforce facility rules and policies to ensure participant safety.
- Monitor cleanliness, setup, and equipment needs for programs and rentals.
- Promote a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for participants.
- Provide age‑appropriate and engaging recreational opportunities.
- Assist with special events and community engagement activities.
- Attend all required trainings, meetings, and in‑service sessions.
- Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating leadership, teamwork, and professionalism.
Experience in recreation, youth sports, aquatics, or facility management preferred.
For Recreation Specialist II & III: one or more years of relevant experience and/or 48 completed college units in Recreation, Education, Kinesiology, or related field.
Licenses & CertificationsValid California Driver’s License
Ability to- Possess qualities of character, personality, and leadership.

All work activities are performed in or outside City and/or MUSD facilities.
Must be able to see and hear, sit and stand for long periods of time.

Use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects and tools and operate motorized equipment.

Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Incumbents are required to use vision and/ or hearing to identify and evaluate field emergencies, and to respond physically to these emergencies quickly and appropriately.
