Project Accountant / Billing Manager

OverviewA growing construction organization is seeking a Project Accountant / Billing Manager to support project financial operations from contract award through project closeout. This position combines traditional project accounting responsibilities with ownership of customer billing, pay applications, lien waivers, and contract administration.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in a construction environment, strong attention to detail, and a solid understanding of AIA billing procedures. This role works closely with project managers, accounting leadership, subcontractors, and customers to ensure accurate project financial reporting and timely invoicing.
Key Responsibilities- Manage project billing activities, including progress billings, time & material billings, and customer invoicing
- Prepare and submit AIA pay applications and supporting documentation
- Track project budgets, costs, committed expenses, and contract values
- Monitor accounts receivable and assist with collections efforts
- Process and maintain lien waivers, sworn statements, and compliance documentation
- Support project managers with cost tracking, forecasting, and financial reporting
- Review contracts and ensure billing aligns with customer requirements
- Maintain accurate project records throughout the project lifecycle
- Assist with month-end close activities, WIP reporting, and revenue recognition processes
- Coordinate with internal accounting, operations, and field teams to resolve billing discrepancies
- 3+ years of project accounting, construction accounting, or construction billing experience
- Experience preparing and managing AIA billing/pay applications
- Understanding of construction contracts, change orders, retainage, and lien waivers
- Strong Excel skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Experience working for a mechanical, electrical, general, or specialty contractor
- Exposure to WIP reporting and project financial analysis
- Experience with construction ERP/accounting systems
- Knowledge of union construction environments is a plus
