Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Facilities Operations supports the district’s mission to inspire and prepare all students with the confidence, courage, and competence to achieve their dreams, contribute to their community, and engage in a lifetime of learning by providing strategic leadership and operational oversight of all facilities services. This position directs daily operations, guides long‑term planning, and ensures efficient, safe, and compliant management of district buildings and grounds.

The Assistant Director collaborates with internal departments and external partners to implement district-wide facilities initiatives, support educational environments, and make system‑level decisions that align with the district’s goals and priorities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provides strategic leadership for facilities operations, aligning practices with district goals and long‑term planning. (30%)

  • Develops leadership capacity by establishing professional growth goals for department staff.
  • Identifies department performance deficiencies through stakeholder feedback and directs corrective training and SOP development.
  • Selects and manages external consultants to assess staffing levels against industry standards.
  • Provides recommendations regarding service delivery models, staffing needs, and operational improvements.
  • Oversees recruitment and hiring practices in collaboration with HR and Labor Relations to ensure legal compliance and alignment with strategic goals.
  • Assists in the planning, coordination, and execution of owner‑managed long‑term facilities maintenance (LTFM) projects.
  • Assists in developing and managing the facilities operations budget to support strategic objectives.
  • Serves on the LTFM Steering Committee with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serves as liaison for Teamster negotiations and collaborates with labor relations on contract terms.
  • Provides operational input and project management support for long‑range facilities planning initiatives.
  • Coordinates with construction consultants to ensure alignment with district priorities and timely completion.

Provides leadership in performance management, continuous improvement, and accountability for staff and partners. (25%)

  • Provides guidance and feedback to department leaders through evaluations focused on continuous improvement.
  • Engages consultants to benchmark practices and lead training initiatives to improve service models.
  • Leads a team of coordinators, delegating responsibilities and establishing standard procedures.
  • Monitors performance assessments to ensure alignment with department and system‑wide objectives.
  • Evaluates consultants and engineers, providing feedback to directors and senior firm leadership.
  • Manages external contractors and collaborates with Purchasing to ensure quality procurement.
  • Oversees project managers and communicates assessment results to leadership committees.

Demonstrates management expertise through budget oversight, standards development, compliance, and capital project leadership. (25%)

  • Directs day‑to‑day facilities operations, ensuring efficient and effective maintenance, custodial, grounds, and ice arena services.
  • Assists with the development, monitoring, and administration of department budgets while ensuring accountability for expenditures.
  • Monitors spending trends and collaborates with Finance and Operations to adjust projections and align with long‑range plans.
  • Develops operational standards through engagement with industry networks and consultants.
  • Provides recommendations for operational adjustments in collaboration with HR and Facilities leadership.
  • Evaluates operational staffing needs and provides recommendations regarding staffing levels and resource allocation.
  • Assists in capital acquisition planning and communicating needs to long‑range planning groups.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance through coordination with agencies such as OSHA and EPA.
