CNC Machinist

The CNC Machinist is responsible for effective set‑up, operation, and troubleshooting of new and existing parts and production lots, detecting malfunctions in machine operations. The role operates computer numerical control (CNC) machines to produce quality parts in accordance with detailed engineering drawings to very tight tolerances. The employee will work with CNC machining centers, multi‑spindle drilling machines, manual drilling machines, single spindle mills, press brakes and measuring equipment, and may edit programs and interpret geometric tolerances on drawings to manufacture parts to specifications.

• Follow all established company policies, rules and regulations, ISO procedures, and work instructions.
• Work from CAD drawings, sketches and verbal instructions to interpret, plan and lay out own work.
• Set up, load parts and operate multiple types of machining equipment safely to produce quality parts on a timely basis to close tolerances.
• Interpret existing CNC programs and edit as necessary, setting up and operating CNC machines.
• Review sequences of machining operations, speeds and feeds and continually offer input to improve production methods.
• Participate in the design and machining of special tooling or fixtures required to manufacture parts.
• Input CNC programs for new parts, utilizing knowledge of numerical control machine operation.
• Calculate and code machine‑controlling criteria such as axis movement, tool selection, spindle location, and machining start.
• Monitor and change tools as required.
• Deburr parts as required to meet quality requirements.
• Detect equipment malfunctions or out‑of‑tolerance machining and adjust machine controls and media as required to ensure production quality.
• Use coordinate measuring machines (manual and automated vision systems) and hand measuring tools to perform quality inspections, including first‑piece inspection and paperwork, and monitor quality parameters on machined parts in process using inspection sheets.
• Communicate with supervisors, engineers, quality and other personnel for priority of assignments and to resolve machining or quality issues.

• Must possess specific certifications as defined by site operations.
• In‑depth knowledge of machine operations and product quality issues.
• Ability to set up, operate, calibrate and maintain machines and tools.
• Ability to recognize and address problems in the production process.
• Effective communication skills with a wide variety of internal and external customers.
• Team collaboration and leadership abilities to deliver high‑quality production within tight deadlines.
• High school graduate with trade school training in machine shop practices and procedures and a minimum of 3 years related experience using vertical CNC machining centers and general purpose machining and inspection equipment.
• Experience handling all phases of set‑up, operation, program editing and solid troubleshooting skills.
• Intermediate knowledge and application of precision measuring instruments, including calipers, /OD micrometers, depth gauges, height gauges and indicators.
• Intermediate knowledge of reading drawings and specifications with understanding of geometric tolerances and dimensions.
• Intermediate knowledge of tool holders, cutting tools, boring bars, fixtures, inserts and other accessories used on various machines.
• Physical capability to perform work in standing and reaching positions, move heavy equipment and materials as required.
• Follow oral and written instructions.
