Ceramics Supervisor
We are seeking a Ceramics Supervisor to provide technical expertise and supervisory leadership for the safe and efficient operation of the ceramic studio. The role oversees studio equipment, materials, processes, instructors and technical staff while ensuring compliance with all safety standards, policies, and procedures. The Ceramics Supervisor leads daily studio operations, supports high-quality ceramic programming through scheduling, systems administration, and staff and instructor support, and delivers strong customer service.
Acting as a key liaison between The ACT Arts Centre, instructors, technicians, and participants, the position ensures clear communication, well‑maintained facilities, and a safe, welcoming studio environment.
This role requires strong organizational skills, advanced technical knowledge of ceramics, independent judgment in technical matters, and the physical ability to perform studio‑related tasks.
Required Competencies- Strong knowledge of ceramic studio operations, including wheel‑throwing, hand‑building, glaze development, and kiln firing processes.
- Demonstrated understanding of ceramic studio safety practices, including WHMIS, Safety Data Sheets, chemical handling, and safe kiln operation.
- Proven leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to develop, foster and maintain strategic partnerships internally and externally.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage schedules, priorities, and operational demands. Physical ability to perform repetitive and demanding studio tasks, including lifting, bending, and reaching into kilns while wearing a respirator.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant registration or scheduling systems.
- Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic, customer‑focused environment.
- Coordinate and oversee daily ceramic studio operations, including glaze calculations, testing and mixing; kiln loading, firing, and unloading; and finishing of clay projects.
- Supervise, schedule, train, and support Ceramic Technicians and auxiliary staff, assigning duties related to cleaning, maintenance, and studio operations.
- Maintain studio cleanliness, organization, safety, and security, including supply and storage areas.
- Administer studio operations including inventory control, ordering supplies and equipment, record keeping, and general administration.
- Ensure studios are properly set up and prepared for classes, workshops, open studio hours, and special events.
- Input and maintain quarterly program, class, and open studio schedules in registration and scheduling systems; prepare instructor schedules and class lists.
- Support instructors and participants on‑site, including class start‑up support, check‑in/out, and response to operational issues or emergencies.
- Communicate with participants and parents on‑site and electronically, including responding to inquiries, issuing cancellations, and managing consent and release documentation.
- Liaise with the Communications team regarding website updates, marketing, and promotion of ceramic programs.
- Support the development of new ceramic programs and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Monitor budgets and expenses; research equipment and materials; and prepare cost estimates and recommendations for repairs, replacement, and capital planning.
- Coordinate facility bookings and technical requirements for special events, visiting artists, and external user groups.
- Maintain records related to studio operations, staffing, inventory, and programming, while creating.
- Administer basic first aid as required and support facility‑wide events and activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Department Manager.
- Secondary School Diploma or completion of a related discipline, combined with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a ceramic's studio supervisory role within an instructional or community environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum five (5) years of demonstrated experience in multiple ceramic techniques and practices, including teaching or leading workshops for all skill levels.
