The City of Maple Ridge seeks a Maintenance Worker – Utilities to provide manual work on maintenance and repair of the City water system, including sanitary and storm sewer systems if required. The incumbent operates, maintains, cleans, tests, repairs and adjusts fire hydrants, pumps and related equipment, and repairs or replaces water or sanitary and storm services. This employee will respond to service calls related to the utility services and connections.
In addition, the work involves supervising staff assigned to perform less complex aspects of the work such as operating a vacuum truck and performing skilled pipe laying and pipe fitting tasks.
This position is located at our Maple Ridge Operations Centre, a front‑line provider for public works services. The operational focus is on health and safety of our citizens, protecting the large investment in public works and underground infrastructure, protecting the environment, and maintaining service levels.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities- Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in water or sewer systems maintenance and in pipe laying and pipe fitting work as they relate to the work performed and of the applicable safety standards and requirements.
- Considerable knowledge of the water and sanitary and storm sewer systems of the functions of the Underground Operations Branch related to the work performed.
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices and rules of safe and efficient operation of medium sized equipment.
- Ability to operate and perform routine servicing and repair of related equipment.
- Ability to comprehend and effectively carry out oral and written instructions with a minimum of supervision and to read and interpret plans, charts, diagrams and layouts.
- Ability to layout, assist in and supervise the work of subordinates engaged in manual maintenance tasks and to direct the work of equipment operators and truck drivers and to ensure adherence to the appropriate safety standards.
- Ability to maintain simple records relating to the work performed.
- Skill in the use of a variety of power and hand tools and equipment common to maintenance work.
- Sufficient physical strength and coordination to permit performance of heavy manual work outdoors in all weather.
Completion of Grade 12 plus sound related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Licences And CertificatesCertification as an EOCP Water Distribution System Operator – Level 1 (in good standing).
Driver’s License valid in the Province of British Columbia – Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement.
Additional InformationThe successful applicant will be expected to participate in emergency response efforts, including watermain breaks and snow‑clearing activities during normal working hours and after hours, as weather conditions require.
