Summary

Scale Operator role in King County’s Solid Waste Division (SWD) involves managing point-of-sale operations at a solid waste facility. Duties include processing customer fees, handling daily financial receipts, securing funds, providing customer service, educating customers on waste disposal rules, maintaining transaction records, managing Scale House supply inventory, and addressing emergency situations.

About this Role

This role is responsible for managing point-of-sale operations, maintaining accurate transaction records, and ensuring compliant fund handling. The core focus is delivering excellent customer service while educating a diverse public on waste disposal rules, unsecured load laws, and compliance ordinances.

Job Duties

Provide professional customer service to internal stakeholders, TSOs, Engineering, Electricians, Mechanics, RES, Communications, Internal Affairs, external stakeholders, public/vendors by addressing inquiries, facilitating solutions, and ensuring understanding of applicable policies, procedures, and processes.

  • Reconcile daily funds & receipts.
  • Handle transactions that include cash, credit cards, Apple Pay, King County vouchers using the Point of Sale system (10‑key).
  • Perform daily reporting of transactions (print receipts, send documents to Leads at Bow Lake).
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with customers, coworkers, vendors, and other departments.
Qualifications You Bring
  • Working knowledge of cash handling and transaction management (3 years preferred).
  • Demonstrated customer service experience in a fast‑paced/high‑volume environment (3 years preferred).
  • 10‑key experience.
  • Aptitude to work closely with others; experience communicating with a diverse range of staff and customers in a respectful, culturally sensitive manner.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; organizational skills.
  • Ability to travel in a timely manner to various work locations, including those not served by public transportation.

Working Conditions

The position is onsite with possibilities of multiple locations within the same week. Employees must reside in Washington state and within reasonable distance to King County worksite.

Work schedule is variable: full‑time or part‑time, with day, swing, and graveyard shifts. Part‑time positions are scheduled as needed with variable hours. Winter months may have limited hours; summer months may require overtime. Employees are expected to work during weather, health, and other emergency events.
