Fire Engineer
DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC SAFETY | JOB CLASSIFICATION: FULL TIME | TECH NET 713 | PAY SCALE: ANNUAL | Minimum Salary: $55,358, Mid $69,197, Max $83,037. Closes June 22, 2026 at 4:00 pm.
Performs a variety of working level firefighting and apparatus driving duties related to protecting the life and property of city residents.
Supervision ReceivedWorks under the close supervision of the Fire Chief or designated shift Captain.
Essential FunctionsDriver/Engineer: Drives heavy fire apparatus to fire and emergency scenes; performs vehicle placement to achieve effective delivery of suppression materials (water/chemicals, etc.); operates fire pumps to control various nozzle pressures and flows; assures proper procedures are followed to engage, prime and discharge supply lines.
Paramedic / AEMT: Evaluates patient’s condition and/or injuries and accident scenes and/or medical emergencies and administers aid as per protocol; monitors patient’s vital signs and provides advanced life support. Operates resuscitation and suction devices during cardiopulmonary resuscitation; uses vacuum splints, cervical collars, backboards, and various other medical devices for immobilization. Applies bandages and dressing on soft tissue injuries as needed to stop bleeding;
lifts and carries patients from scene to ambulance according to established procedures; performs complex lifesaving procedures such as advanced airways, intubations, defibrillation, and IV’s; administers cardiac medications and performs related cardiac support functions.
Fire Fighter: Performs duties as a Company officer and senior fire fighter; serves as a department training officer in specialty areas of firefighting techniques and/or emergency medical response practices and procedures; coordinates daily/weekly departmental training and monitors personnel training progress. Receives and conducts continuous classroom and field training in a wide range of fire prevention, emergency medical, and firefighting techniques, principles, and procedures;
receives specialized training in salvage and rescue operation, emergency medical aid, civil defense, hazardous materials, disaster, drowning, and other related emergency situations; participates in drills.
Public Relations: Participates in making public presentations in schools, etc. to promote fire hazard awareness and fire prevention.
Must be able to lift, carry, and/or operate any piece of equipment on a department apparatus.
Minimum Qualifications- A. Graduation from high school or equivalent; AND
- B. Two (2) years of Fire/EMS experience, including possession of a current Utah State Paramedic certification (preferred) or Utah State AEMT certification, Current AHA CPR, Current AHA ACLS, Current PALS, PEPP or Handtevy, current Utah Fire and Rescue Academy Firefighter I and II with Haz Mat awareness and Ops certifications, Current Utah Fire and Rescue Academy Apparatus Driver Operator – Pumper and Aerial certification, and certifications such as IS-100, IS-700, S-190, S-130, L-180, RT-130 or equivalent.
- C. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
ability to follow detailed verbal or written work instructions, work in dangerous emergency situations; perform strenuous physical labor; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; assimilate modern firefighting skills; perform under extreme weather conditions; work on call and shift work; develop effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.
