Laboratory Safety Engineer
As a Laboratory Safety Engineer for the Abrasives Systems Division (ASD) Lab, you will lead the laboratory safety program, partnering closely with site and corporate safety resources. Your core responsibilities include:
- Lead the laboratory safety program as the primary on‑site safety professional.
- Execute Management of Change (MOC), risk assessments, and safety reviews for lab‑scale and manufacturing‑scale equipment including coating lines, automated machinery, and industrial robots.
- Review, approve, and improve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs), coaching engineers and technicians in compliant document development.
- Drive proactive safety communication through campaigns, training, and routine engagement to reinforce safe behaviors and hazard awareness.
- Support incident response, investigations, and corrective actions to reduce risk and strengthen laboratory safety performance.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science, or another physical science (completed and verified prior to start).
- Three (3) or more years of safety engineering or related experience in an industrial laboratory or manufacturing environment.
- Three (3) or more years of hands‑on experience supporting environments with machine guarding, automated equipment, or manufacturing‑scale systems.
- Three (3) or more years of working knowledge of hazard identification, risk assessment methodologies, and Management of Change processes.
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed include:
- Experience supporting R&D or pilot‑scale laboratory operations with manufacturing‑type hazards.
- Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and coach technical staff on safety expectations and documentation quality.
- Strong communication skills for delivering safety messaging, training, and campaign‑based initiatives.
- Interest and demonstrated capability to grow toward more advanced (T3‑level) safety engineering responsibilities over time.
This role is an on‑site position requiring at least four days per week at the 3M Center in Maplewood, MN, with one flexible workday per week.
TravelTravel is expected to be minimal to none.

Compensation and BenefitsExpected compensation range: $98,964 – $120,957, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible.
