About the Role
The Senior X-ray Scientist will join a multidisciplinary team in the Corporate Research Lab at 3M, applying X-ray scattering expertise to generate new business opportunities and support existing products and businesses. The role focuses on advancing R&D analytical capabilities, developing new technologies, and communicating findings to stakeholders.
Responsibilities- Apply X‑ray scattering measurement and theory to solve complex material challenges and advance R&D analytical capabilities.
- Collaborate with chemists, physicists, and engineers on theoretical and practical projects that drive new‑to‑the‑world technology development and introduction.
- Develop and implement relevant X‑ray scattering technologies that support 3M research and development.
- Prepare technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and reports, to communicate findings and progress.
- Remain current with the latest advancements in X‑ray technologies and incorporate relevant innovations into work.
- Comply with export control laws, security policies, and other regulatory requirements, ensuring that all work meets U.S. Export Control Law and DoD contract obligations.
- Follow corporate policies, procedures, and security standards while performing assigned duties.
- Contribute to a strong Environmental Health and Safety culture by following safety policies, identifying hazards, and engaging in continuous improvement.
- Master's degree (completed prior to start) from an accredited institution.
- Four (4) years of experience with X‑ray research techniques in a public, private, academic, government, or military environment.
- Strong expertise in X‑ray scattering and diffraction.
- Domain expertise in X‑ray scattering, X‑ray diffraction, X‑ray microscopy, and X‑ray computed tomography (CT), data analytics, and data science.
- Programming experience in Python.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey technical information.
- Experience leading projects.
- PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field is a plus.
- Solid understanding of experimental techniques for X‑ray characterization and testing, especially on in organics, ceramics, nanoparticles, and polymers.
Lab‑based on site in Maplewood, MN.
Travel may include up to 5% domestic/international.
Relocation benefits may be authorized.

Compensation & BenefitsExpected compensation range: $145,676 – $178,049, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible.
