Position Summary
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Program Assistant will provide direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students by teaching youth classes in the arts and enrichment to various age groups. You will create positive, nurturing relationships with children and build cooperative relationships with parents and caregivers.
Responsibilities- Assist with designing and delivering lesson plans tailored to the skills and interests of each age group.
- Assist in instruction of a group in accordance with YMCA guidelines.
- Help plan, set up, and deliver a variety of activities within the interest area that are age‑specific and keep children’s engagement and interest high.
- Build authentic relationships with students and parents, encourage parent involvement, and identify potential volunteers.
- Ensure organized class management so all participants can be seen at all times.
- Assist in instruction that is appropriate for the age group and ensure participants understand the instructions.
- Use teachable moments to discuss character development and provide constructive feedback during class sessions using positive motivation techniques.
- Maintain records as required (attendance, progress reports, etc.).
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures, and complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Utilize equipment appropriately for activities, incorporate skill development, organize and put away needed class equipment, clean up after each session, and report damaged equipment.
- Uphold, model, teach, and put the four core values of the YMCA into action in all activities—Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
- Create a positive and nurturing learning environment to instill and encourage youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Flexible schedule; weekday afternoons.
- Preferred: previous experience working with children.
- Preferred: previous experience working with diverse populations.
Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions. Must be able to plan, lead, and participate in a range of activities, instruct and actively observe participants. Ability to stand for long periods, walk, use hands, stoop, and crouch. Regularly lift up to 10–50 pounds.
Pay$16.00–$20.00 per hour.
