Mechanical Engineer

We are seeking a motivated Mechanical Engineer for our seven-acre greenhouse. This position will be located in Marana, AZ, reporting to the Greenhouse Engineering Lead. This position will serve a vital role performing mechanical design and production of custom automation solutions on a team consisting of electrical engineers, software developers and other mechanical engineers. The equipment developed follows an iterative design-test approach commonly found on prototype equipment and low volume production equipment.

The successful candidate will demonstrate solid mechanical design skills, familiarity with various manufacturing techniques, component selection and a hefty dose of creativity. This position is based on premises with limited opportunity for hybrid work.

Key Responsibilities:

• Use Solid Works 3D modeling program to design custom parts to be manufactured via CNC, laser cutting, water jetting, 3D printing, molding, bending etc
• Material selection based on performance, cost, and speed of manufacturability.
• Configure and select components including but not limited to pneumatic air cylinders, servo motors, stepper motors, object detection sensors, fastening hardware and other off the shelf components.
• Create 3D assemblies of automation equipment using components described above
• Test designs for fit, function, operator feedback, and iterate design accordingly.
• Create both assembly drawings and part drawings for manufacturing
• Resolve existing issues with current equipment to improve safety and/or operation

Required Skills/

Experience:

• BS or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related Engineering field from ABET accredited program
• Intermediate level of Solidworks 3D modeling program skill or higher
• High degree of mechanical aptitude, and general knowledge automation equipment
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite of tools

What is a day like in this role? What 3-5 responsibilities will occupy their time?

• Attend project meetings
• Design parts and assemblies in Solidworks
• Host design review meetings (for feedback from other engineers on designs)
• Interact with operators on site and seek their feedback as end-users of our products

• Other engineers on a multi discipline team
• Stakeholders/customers internal to Bayer

Tell me about the team dynamic/culture.

Somewhat less formal than some other engineering groups. Emphasis on speed of delivery over perfection.

What are the ‘must haves’ to be successful in this role?

Flexibility, creativity, communication skills (especially outside of engineering team)

What is the long term plan for this role?

Team is growing, if growth is successful will probably continue to need this skillset.

What will make this opportunity stand out for potential candidates?

Again in relative terms, this team gets to see the entire product development lifecycle in close collaboration with the end users, so quick turnaround times but its fun to be a part of research and development rather than designing a mold to make 7,000,000 injection molded ballpoint pens or something.

Communication with non technical people and being able to sift through their feedback to find out what is truly important to them in a design.

Are you open to candidates relocating (on their own) or do you prefer local candidates?

Relocation is fine

What is the minimum number of years of experience required for this position?

3 years in a similar environment but that’s more of a guideline. Total number of years as an engineer isn’t a useful metric, only time spent doing a similar rapid development type of design role. I’d like someone who has done rapid development for at least 1 year

What is the minimum level of education needed for this position?

BS degree.

Is there a possibility for an extension of this assignment?

Yes

Will this position convert to a FTE Role?

Convert? No. But at some point we could open an FTE role and someone in this position would be a prime candidate.
