Gem City Steel Supply's structural steel fabrication operation is located in Marietta, Georgia and is seeking to add a professional estimator/project manager with knowledge of, and proven experience in structural steel estimation and project management. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated self-starter who is well-versed in the best practices of structural fabrication with a mind for generating profit. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 to 15 years of structural steel estimating and steel project management experience in jobs ranging up to 1000+ tons.
A welding/fabrication/erection background as well as working knowledge of Tekla and AISC procedures are a requirement.
The objective for the Estimator / Project Manager (EPM) is to maximize long-term profits for the company through:
1. Selecting potential workEPM is responsible for screening work opportunities and selecting the jobs to be bid.
Current selection criteria are (in order):
- A. Jobs requested by existing customers including:
- 1. Primary-sized commercial projects
- 3. Courtesy jobs
- B. Jobs for customers we want to develop relationships with
- C. Odd or interesting opportunities that have high profit potential or meet current shop hours needed.
- E. Public bid jobs requested by current or past customers
- A. Sending RFQ’s to all vendors
- B. Creating takeoff and estimate recap
- C. Creating proposal
- D. Issuing proposal and follow up as needed
- E. Avoiding mistakes
- B. Maintain files for reference as project proceeds
- C. Typically requires multiple rounds of pricing
- D. Good records are essential
EPM is responsible for negotiating and fulfilling subcontracts with our customers:
- A. Review, notate and sign contracts. Major contracts require legal review.
- B. Create timely change order requests as required
- C. Create and submit timely billing documents for all jobs
- D. Maintain detailed files for each job. Job file should be current and easily navigable.
- E. Schedule drawing submittals and shop drawing releases to accommodate project schedule
EPM is responsible for sourcing shop drawings for approval, fabrication and field use:
- A. Sublet major jobs with primary detailer, currently Whiteboard
- B. Sublet smaller work to secondary detailer, currently Tim Hurst
- C. EPM to hand draw sheet drawings for residential and other small jobs
- D. Handle RFI’s from detailers
- E. Approve detailing invoices and submit for payment
A. Provide production department with:
- 1. Approved shop drawings
- 2. NC1 files
- 3. Other files provided by detailers
B. Buy main material and provide shop with cutting patterns and order acknowledgements
C. Buy detail material and provide shop with order acknowledgements
D. Buy joists, decking or other sublet work
E. Buy erection if within scope
F. Issue field use drawings to erector and customer
G. Buy field bolts
7. Facilitating Shipment of Material- A. Hire transportation or arrange in-house
- B. Maintain BOL’s/POD for each shipment
- A. Answering questions from customer or erector
- B. Addressing errors of all kinds and submitting repair sketches to design team for approval when needed.
- C. Working with erector to ensure all field inspections are successful
- A. Ensure that work is complete and submit final and/or retainage billing
- B. Submit any closeout documents required by customer
