Position

Summary

Are you an experienced estimator who can combine technical accuracy, commercial judgment, and responsive customer communication? AJ Glass is seeking a skilled Estimator II to independently own a broad range of commercial glazing bids from takeoff through proposal and handoff. In this role, you’ll manage bids of increasing complexity, collaborate directly with general contractors and vendors, and help improve bid quality, turnaround, pricing consistency, and customer confidence.

The Estimator II role is an independent-producing position that can build toward Lead Estimator responsibility through sustained accuracy, judgment, technical breadth, and contribution to the estimating team.

What You’ll Do
  • Review drawings, specifications, addenda, and bid documents for a broad range of commercial glazing projects, including multi-story scopes, interior fit-outs, exterior systems, specialty glass, and hardware packages.
  • Perform and verify takeoffs, assemblies, labor assumptions, scope, exclusions, and supporting documentation, and draft clear Requests for Information (RFIs) when clarification is needed. Unusual, high-risk, or commercially significant issues should be escalated to management as appropriate.
  • Independently prepare detailed estimates and change order requests, ensuring bid package is complete and accurate prior to Senior Estimator review and final submission.
  • Maintain clear, proactive communication with general contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders throughout a high-volume, frequently reprioritized bid process to clarify scope, manage expectations, and resolve issues quickly.
  • Send and track complete Requests for Quotation (RFQs); verify quotation accuracy and completeness and follow up with vendors to ensure timely responses.
  • Lead routine pricing discussions and contribute to more complex bid negotiations by presenting clear, well-supported scope and pricing recommendations.
  • Analyze historical pricing and available cost information to keep current proposals accurate, competitive, and aligned with established cost trends and margin expectations.
  • Take ownership of unique or complex estimating tasks, including cost reports, takeoff verification, project-history research, and other analysis needed to resolve scope or pricing uncertainty; communicate early when an estimate cannot be responsibly submitted by the requested deadline.
  • Communicate significant pricing changes to general contractors by clearly explaining the underlying scope, quantity, material, or assumption changes before submitting revised proposals.
What We’re Looking For
  • 2-3 years of experience in commercial construction estimating, preferably with a focus on glazing systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or construction management is a plus, but we also highly value hands on experience.
  • Working knowledge of curtain wall, storefront, thermal systems, hardware packages, specialty glass, and related materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage estimates from takeoff and vendor pricing through proposal, revision, and handoff; ability to identify material scope gaps or commercial risk.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Bluebeam; familiarity with platforms such as Procore; and comfort learning cloud-based takeoff, estimating, scheduling, and collaboration systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including professional communication with general contractors and vendors, scope clarification, pricing discussions, and expectation management.
  • Self-motivated, solution-oriented, and collaborative, with sound judgment about when additional review, clarification, qualification, or escalation is required; willing to share knowledge and…
