Customer Service Rep
The purpose of this classification is to provide customer service for the assigned department with an emphasis on processing transactions and collecting payments.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsIncumbents in this class are knowledgeable and must be able to independently handle or process the most complex transactions and a wide variety of customer transactions or inquiries that span County operations in multiple departments.
Essential Functions- Lead and coordinate daily work activities of assigned crew or co-workers, including conferring with supervisor, monitoring status, inspecting completed work, and providing technical expertise and training.
- Perform customer service functions by greeting visitors, answering telephones, assisting customers, citizens, and taxpayers, and referring callers or visitors to appropriate staff.
- Receive, record, and prepare receipts for payments for utility services, fines, fees, new service deposits, new meters, sewer connections, taxes, business licenses, police bonds, permits, court fees, and other unit‑specific fees or services.
- Assist staff or customers in resolving disputes concerning payments, fees, penalties, procedural or legal requirements for the assignment area.
- Establish and maintain manual and automated records regarding customer accounts, including creating new accounts, processing connection/disconnection of services, preparing work orders, and monitoring billing errors.
- Prepare and mail billings and reminders for payments due, monitor delinquencies, and perform necessary follow‑up to bring accounts current.
- Perform money‑management functions such as verifying inventory, counting and balancing cash, preparing tallies, and balancing and preparing daily bank deposits for pickup by courier.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Four years of experience in customer service or cashiering in a professional setting.
Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects or materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
Sensory RequirementsSome tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental FactorsEssential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
