Job Description
The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Instructor at Gwinnett County Police Department is responsible for teaching various BJJ techniques, developing students' skills, and ensuring safety and risk awareness during training sessions. The BJJ Instructor will prepare students for self‑defense scenarios while conducting performance evaluations and maintaining ethical standards. The incumbent may be required to work 8‑, 10‑, or 12‑hour rotating shifts.
Essential Duties- Teaches advanced self‑defense classes focusing on developing the student’s approach to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu primarily at the Gwinnett County Police Department’s Training facility.
- Performs demonstrations, teaches seminars, and plans and schedules classes; maintains records and other documentation such as class registrations, attendance records, and facility usage.
- Assists in teaching techniques using entire body movements, rotating the hip with each guard control, passage, sweep, and block (fighting stance, motion, guards, and blocks in both offensive and defensive forms are the core concepts included in the curriculum).
- Plans daily routines and chooses different movements for each muscle, depending on students’ capabilities and limitations.
- Monitors students’ progress and informs them of corrective measures necessary for skill improvement and adapting the training programs, as needed.
- Evaluates and ensures safety protocols, environmental hazards, and risk awareness during training sessions, and responds to and treats minor injuries.
- Evaluates operations and programs.
- Collaborates and coordinates training with other Gwinnett County Police Department instructors and staff.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level, as assigned.
Job Requirements / Information
- This job is safety‑sensitive and will require a pre‑employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing.
- This is a civilian position in a public safety department. Due to the sensitive nature of the role, a public safety background is required, which may include motor vehicle & criminal histories, and fingerprinting.
- This job requires fingerprinting.
- This job may require on‑call rotation and emergency after‑hours, weekends, and/or holidays.
Grade 100. Salary will be dependent on education and experience. Effective 4/11/2023, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Two (2) years of experience in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction or coaching.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
- Current Georgia POST Certified Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Instructor
- Level II Instructor Training Completion Certificate
- Valid Driver’s License from state of residency
- CPR Certification
- First Aid Certification
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in Health Science or a related field.
- Obtained 'Black Belt' in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from a reputable instructor.
- One or more years of experience coaching at a reputable Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym.
