The Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy at Augusta University seeks a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Anthropology to teach introductory Biological Anthropology and upper division classes in Forensic Anthropology and other Anthropology classes as needed. Candidates must be able to instruct introductory Biological Anthropology labs as well as lecturers. Graduate work in biological archaeology preferred. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and present a compelling research agenda, with the ability to include undergraduates in research at Augusta University.

Responsibilities

Teach 9 credit hours a semester (equivalent of 3:3). This will include an upper division class in Biological Anthropology, a lecture in Introduction to Anthropology, and 3 sections of lab, as well as other classes as assigned.

Hold office hours, providing timely grading and student feedback

Adhere to all academic policies of the University.

Maintain a high-quality research program

Participate in shared governance, of department, college, and university as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Earned doctorate in Anthropology at time of appointment with a concentration in Biological Anthropology

Assistant Professor
- Terminal degree (or nearing its completion), or its equivalent in training, ability, and/or experience.

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:

  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching both online and in-person classes and labs

Ability to involve undergraduates in research

Track record of success teaching a wide variety of undergraduate students

Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is academic year based and typically works August through May, depending on dates outlined in offer letter and yearly contract.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0.

Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.

The History, Anthropology, and Philosophy department offers undergraduates degrees in History and Anthropology, and teaches a broad range of core social science, lab science, and humanities courses. In addition to offering undergraduate BAs in Anthropology and History, the Department houses concentrations in Public History and Secondary Education teaching, as well as a minor in Philosophy and certificates in Museum Studies and Health Humanities.

The department is home to an Archaeology lab, a Biological Anthropology teaching lab, and the director of the Guard House Museum. We are located on the beautiful and historic Summerville campus.
