Job Title Specialist Controls Project Engineer Job Description
Vanderlande’s Controls Engineering Department designs, programs, commissions, and tests advanced material handling systems for our customers. This is a senior-level position. As a Specialist Controls Project Engineer, you will lead the PLC design, testing, and commissioning of both small- and large-scale material handling systems that integrate complex hardware and software components.
In this role, you will work independently with minimal oversight, take ownership of critical project deliverables, and provide technical leadership to ensure the successful execution of project milestones and fully operational systems in the field.
Key Responsibilities Design & Engineering- Lead the review of electrical drawings, specifications, and equipment lists to align PLC design
- Review system layouts, safety layouts, and electrical distributions (480 VAC, 120 VAC, 24 VDC)
- Evaluate third-party equipment mechanical and electrical interfaces
- Develop and approve detailed controls design documentation and position papers
- Create and review PLC design sheets, network topology diagrams, OEE flow maps, and interface lists
- Perform and lead internal peer reviews of PLC design elements
- Architect, write, debug, and test PLC code for complex systems
- Configure component-level devices and field hardware
- Commission and test PLC control panels independently
- Proactively identify and resolve network communication issues
- Troubleshoot complex electrical and controls issues on conveyor systems, motors, drives, and related equipment
- Lead device-, zone-, area-, and system-level testing in support of commissioning
- Develop, execute, and sign off on commissioning checklists and test plans
- Document commissioning activities, testing results, and system performance
- Own punch list management, execution, and closure
- Monitor and guide subcontractor activities and performance
- Perform on-site quality audits and provide formal status reporting
- Prepare and review daily and weekly project progress reports
- Maintain PLC IP lists, vendor IP lists, I/O checklists, and interface documentation
- Support integrated system-level testing and final system validation
- Provide senior-level remote customer support for existing systems
- Participate in Controls SCRUM meetings and cross-functional technical reviews
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance when needed
- Enforce all jobsite safety requirements and best practices
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology (or equivalent experience)
- Minimum 7 years of experience implementing material handling systems or industrial control systems
- Advanced experience with PLC hardware and software (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or equivalent)
- Strong working knowledge of industrial communication protocols (Ether Net/IP, Modbus, etc.)
- Expert-level understanding of PLC logic, programming, and troubleshooting
- Solid understanding of industrial networking principles and computer hardware configuration
- Proven ability to manage priorities, schedules, and technical risks
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ownership mindset and accountability for project outcomes
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 50%, with flexibility based on project needs
- Strong understanding of electrical controls hardware design and power distribution (480 VAC / 120 VAC / 24 VDC)
- Advanced knowledge of machine and system safety standards and design considerations
- Ability to read and write Structured Text (preferred)
- Experience with SQL, Visual Basic, C, C++, C#, or similar programming languages
- Experience with industrial network architecture and hardware selection
- Proven ability to mentor, influence, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
- Ability to climb a two‑story ladder
- Ability to walk one mile in 20 minutes
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. without difficulty
- Ability to work up to 10 hours standing, sitting, walking, and climbing stairs
- Comfortable working in office, factory, and construction environments
